SMIC Announces Appointment of Morning Wu as Acting Chief Financial Officer and Chief Accounting Officer

March 29, 2005, Hong Kong - Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation ("SMIC" or the "Company"; SEHK: 0981; NYSE: SMI) announced today that it has appointed Ms. Morning Wu as the Company’s acting Chief Financial Officer and Chief Accounting Officer with immediate effect.

Ms. Wu replaces Ms. Jenny Wang, who resigned as the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Accounting Officer of the Company on March 28, 2005 to enable her to pursue other business interests. The Company would like to thank Ms. Wang for her contributions to the Company during her term of service.

Ms Wang had performed the role of qualified accountant of the Company. The position of qualified accountant will also be replaced by Ms Wu.

Ms. Wu joined the Company as Associate Vice President of Finance and Accounting in January 2003 and has over 25 years of experience in the investment and finance field. Prior to joining the Company, Ms. Wu held management positions with First Taiwan Securities Inc. and Grand Cathay Securities Co. Ltd., where her responsibilities included strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions and designing and monitoring risk management systems.

Ms. Wu graduated from the National Chengchi University with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting and from the National Taiwan University with a Master's degree in Accounting. In addition, she holds a license for Accounting and Auditor with the Senior Civil Service Examination of Taiwan.

Commenting on the appointment, Mr. Richard R. Chang, Chairman of the Company, said, "On behalf of the board, we would like to thank Jenny for her contributions to the Company and wish her every success in her career. Ms. Wu has demonstrated a comprehensive knowledge of financial and accounting matters since she joined the Company at the beginning of 2003.
