Shanghai  [2008-09-26]

(Shanghai, China, 2008-9-26 ) Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) (NYSE: SMI; SEHK: 0981.HK) announced that on Sept. 10, 2008, its S2/FAB 8 passed the BSI ISO27001: 2005 with "zero defect" -- an outstanding achievement. The BSI ISO27001 audit is the expansion of the information security management systems certification review, which was an added certification to the original mask shop and design center services. SMIC's S2/FAB 8 is its first chip production line to receive ISO27001 certification.

ISO 27001 is a widely recognized information security standard in the industry, and is the only provision of the Information Security Management System (ISMS) that meets the requirements of the international audit standards by the International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission published in October 2005. ISO 27001 is the only existing secure information security management standard. The standards provide for the establishment of implementation, operation, monitoring, reviewing, maintaining and improving an information security system framework to ensure that businesses choose a suitable full spectrum of security measures to protect their information assets.

SMIC Mask Shop Director Jesse Huang commented, "The protection of customers' information, particularly IP (intellectual property) and trade secrets, is a top priority for SMIC. By providing continuous training and establishing information security standards, we strive to strengthen awareness of information security among our employees. In SMIC's mask shop, GDSII and Mebes documents are transferred via an independent server to ensure maximum data and network security. Furthermore, we implement added security by encrypting data files. The ISO 27001 certification recognizes SMIC's efforts and prompts us to further perfect our information security protection measures in strengthening our partnerships with global customers."

SMIC S2 Center head Dr. Allan Lin said, "Information security is reliant upon customer trust, and is an important gate to expanding business operations. SMIC attaches great importance to the protection of customer IP. We not only implement strict control over the access of IPs for the sake of our clients, but also provide additional security by using an independent database and network. Attaining the ISO 27001 information security management system certification results from and demonstrates our continuous efforts on maintaining the high level of information security which helps strengthen our partnerships with global customers."
