Europe's leading independent R&D center for microelectronics, IMEC, today announced the signing of a Letter of Intent this week in Shanghai with Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) to establish a long-term partnership in the area of advanced semiconductor process technologies.
Based on an advanced process technology information exchange between the two parties, SMIC will join most of IMEC's Industrial Affiliation Programs (IIAPs) for silicon process technologies.

Prof. Gilbert Declerck, President and CEO of IMEC, commented, "Further miniaturization of production processes requires technological breakthroughs that entail enormous investments. Last year it became clear that, more than ever, global partnerships are needed worldwide to accomplish this. Knowledge, costs and risk must be shared. We are willing to establish a long-term partnership with SMIC.”

“This agreement” said Simon Yang, R&D VP of SMIC, “is a part of SMIC’s initiative to enter the world-class community for research and development to position the company for long-term technology leadership. The collaboration between SMIC’s strong internal development teams and IMEC’s leading-edge research capacity is a win-win strategy.”

About IMEC
IMEC was founded in 1984 and today is Europe's leading independent research center in the field of microelectronics, nanotechnology, enabling design methods and technologies for information and communication technologies (ICT) systems. IMEC's activities concentrate on the design technology for integrated information and communication systems; silicon process technology; silicon technology and device integration; nanotechnology, microsystems, components and packaging; solar cells; and advanced training in microelectronics. IMEC is headquartered in Leuven, Belgium, and has a staff of more than 1200 people including over 350 industrial residents and guest researchers. IMEC has a 0.13-micron 200mm pilot line and is ISO9001 certified. Its revenue of more than 120Meuro is derived from agreements and contracts with the Flemish government and companies, the EC, MEDEA+, the European Space Agency, equipment and material suppliers, and semiconductor and system-oriented companies worldwide.
