SMIC's Fabs
SMIC's headquarters and main wafer manufacturing facilities are located in Shanghai, a key industrial and commercial center in China. In addition to the 300-millimeter fab under pilot production and three 200-millimeter wafer fabs in its Shanghai mega-fab, SMIC also operates two 300-millimeter wafer fabs in its Beijing mega-fab and a 200-millimeter wafer fab in Tianjin. Strategic location in these key areas enables SMIC to provide better service for the growing number of IC design houses and customers in these areas, and to provide customers access into the large consumer markets throughout China.
In May of 2003, SMIC's Fab
1 was honored with Semiconductor International's "2003
Top Fab of the Year" award. This accolade was achieved
in a little over one year since pilot production began at Fab
1.
"We are delighted to
select SMIC as one of the top fabs in the world in 2003. We
based our decision on many factors, including manufacturing
capability, ramp-time, degree of automation, contamination control
procedures, and consideration given to worker and environmental
health and safety. We found SMIC to excel in all these areas.
We were particularly impressed with how quickly SMIC was able
to put copper processing capabilities into volume production."
- Peter Singer, Editor-in-Chief, Semiconductor International.
SMIC Shanghai
SMIC's
headquarters are located in Shanghai's Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park,
conveniently located midway between Shanghai's two major airports.
Shanghai is home to a growing number of local and international
semiconductor companies. There are currently over 100 design
houses, 7 wafer fabs, 30 assembly and testing houses and 30
equipment and materials vendors here.
Fab 1 and Fab 2 offer 200 mm front-end wafer fabrication for
0.35 ¦Ìm to 90 nm line process technologies. Fab 3B is a separate
back-end fab that is attached to Fab 1 and Fab 2. The concept
behind this unique fab arrangement is to prevent metal contamination
to the front-end processes. It also enables customers to access
copper interconnect services without making capital investment
in a copper line.
All three Shanghai fabs have
achieved ISO9001, ISO/TS16949, ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 certification,
for attaining high standards in quality, automotive applications
and continuous improvement of device quality and reliability,
environmental protection as well as health and safety, respectively.
SMIC Beijing
SMIC has an advanced 300 mm facility in the Beijing Economic
and Technological Development Area. SMIC Beijing's fabs share
the same concept behind SMIC Shanghai's fab layout. Fab 4 and
Fab 5 are dedicated to front-end wafer fabrication, while Fab
6C is dedicated to back-end wafer manufacturing.
SMIC Beijing's Fab 4 entered into production in September 2004.
SMIC Tianjin

SMIC acquired its fourth 200
mm fab, Fab 7, located in Tianjin's Xiqing Economic Development
Area in 2004. The fab manufactures wafers at 0.35 ¦Ìm to 0.15
¦Ìm, enabling SMIC to meet its increasing capacity needs and
provide greater flexibility in meeting the requirements of its
global customer base.
Joint Ventures
To
supplement its in-house turn-key manufacturing services
in China, SMIC began production at its assembly and testing
facility (AT2), a joint venture with UTAC in Chengdu, in December
2005. In addition, SMIC's joint venture with Toppan (Fab 9)
to manufacture on-chip color filters and micro lenses also began
production in December 2005.
