According to data released by China’s State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), SMIC ranked fifth among all domestic patent grantees in 2012, an improvement from its ninth-place ranking in 2011. SIPO granted 530 invention patents to SMIC in 2012, an increase of over 45% from the previous year.
