Career Development
Every employee aspires to career success, and in order to achieve it they take the initiative in learning and growing. Employees work with supervisors and human resources staff to create a customized Individual Development Plan (IDP) involving on-the-job training and classroom training. An online e-learning system is also available for employees to acquire knowledge during their downtime. For employees in technical and engineering fields, a dual-track career development plan is designed for them to become an expert in their field or work toward a managerial position. In addition, internal job transfers and rotations are highly encouraged; talented employees can take advantage of these opportunities to broaden their knowledge and develop skills in multiple areas at an accelerated pace.

Training and Development

Multi-dimensional training
SMIC provides in-house training courses, e-learning and on-the-job training to develop employees’ potential in professional competencies, core competencies and managerial competencies at different career stages. To create a learning culture and encourage colleagues to learn actively, we invite hundreds of internal instructors as well as external professional trainers. The training courses offered cover professional skills, manufacturing, research and development, quality control, production support, life management and personal development, leadership, culture and values, etc. There are also 700 e-learning courses that can be taken online.

Individual Development Plan (IDP)
Every year supervisors develop measurable training objectives with their subordinates based on each employee’s "Expected Results" and "Current Status." The IDP includes classroom training and on-the-job training, which are made available according to position and job responsibilities. On-the-job training is guided by mentors to combine practice with training. Proper career planning is the starting point of success; SMIC's Individual Development Plan helps employees move toward their career goals.

New Employee Cultivation Plan
In addition to new employee orientation, SMIC assigns a human resources “partner” to each new employee. Human resources staff make follow-up contact with each newcomer during the first three months after arrival to provide ongoing assistance and to help them experience a smooth transition to the SMIC family.

Personal Growth

Continuing Education
SMIC provides a good environment for employees to meet their desire to grow outside of work. We encourage employees to participate in continuing education programs, and eligible employees can receive tuition assistance.

SMIC partners with Peking University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Fudan University, Tianjin University, Shanghai University, Tianjin Normal University, Beijing University of Technology, and Xihua University for graduate degree programs and also works with universities to bring faculty on-site for degree-earning & vocational programs.

External Training
To help employees to continually advance their professional and management skills, the company offers external training opportunities. Employees have the opportunity to attend various external advanced technical and management training, including overseas training.

Internal Instructor Program
SMIC strategically selects and trains employees who are interested to become internal instructors. These individuals participate in Train the Trainer workshops and utilize what they learn to train other employees in their respective fields within the company. Outstanding instructors receive special recognition for their contributions.
